USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINTS BATTLE AT QUEEN CREEK SATURDAYsouthwest
Lance Jennings… PEORIA, AZ – JULY 9, 2013… The powerful cars of the USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series are set to invade Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway this Saturday, July 13th. Located within the ET Motopark, the action packed showcase will also feature Supers, Mod Lites, and Bombers. The Front Gates will open at 5:00pm and Racing at the popular 3/8-mile facility is scheduled to begin at 8:00pm.
Saturday’s race will mark the fourth appearance at Arizona Speedway for the traditional sprint cars. “The Magic Man” Mike Martin claimed the April 13th victory and point leader R.J. Johnson scored the May 11th triumph. On June 8th, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. added the 30-lap main event to his win list.
Heading to Queen Creek, R.J. Johnson of Phoenix sits atop the standings with a 74 point advantage over the competition. Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson dominated the June 29th “Summer Sizzle” at Canyon Speedway Park, but had to settle for second. To date, the point leader has six feature wins, six heat race victories, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one hard charger award, twelve top-10 finishes, and 156 feature laps led. R.J. will have his sights on Saturday’s feature win and continuing his championship bid.
Buckeye’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. is second in the championship points. Racing the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis passed Johnson on the last corner to claim the “Summer Sizzle” victory. Currently, the five-time Arizona Champion has three feature wins, four heat race victories, two Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one semi-main win, two hard charger awards, twelve top-10 finishes, and 62 feature laps led. “Chargin” Charles will be looking to gain valuable points with another Arizona Speedway feature win.
Sitting third in the point chase is “The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma. Piloting his #16 Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin claimed fourth in the Canyon Speedway Park feature. The veteran driver has one feature win, one fast time award, five heat race victories, nine top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led in the year. On Saturday, Mike will be one of the favorites to watch at the Queen Creek facility.
Phoenix’s Shon Deskins is fourth in the SouthWest point standings. Driving his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars entry, Deskins ran eleventh in the June 29th “Summer Sizzle.” As this writing goes to press, the hard charger has yet to win a feature in 2013, but has five heat race victories, one hard charger award, and eight top-10 finishes to his credit. Shon will have his sights on the 30-lap main event win this Saturday night.
Josh Pelkey of Peoria has climbed to fifth in the point chase. Racing the Robbie and Gaye Allen owned #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts DRC, Pelkey was fifth at Canyon Speedway Park. To date, the former Arizona Champion has one feature win, two heat race victories, one Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash win, one semi-main win, ten top-10 finishes, and 35 feature laps led on the year. Josh will be in the mix to add the Arizona Speedway main event to his resume.
