77Lance Jennings — QUEEN CREEK, AZ – JULY 14, 2013… Last Saturday was a night to remember for R.J. Johnson of Phoenix at Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway. The USAC SouthWest Sprint Car point leader swept the program by winning his heat race, winning the Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash, and leading every lap of the main event. Josh Pelkey, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, and Chris Bonneau followed Johnson to the checkered flags.

Piloting Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, R.J. Johnson is having his best season behind the wheel of a Sprint Car. Johnson won his seventh feature of the campaign and left Arizona Speedway with an 80 point advantage over the field. To date, the second generation driver has seven heat race victories, four Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one hard charger award, thirteen top-10 finishes, and 186 feature laps led to his credit.

Peoria’s Josh Pelkey was second in the 30-lap main event at Arizona Speedway. Racing Robbie and Gaye Allen’s #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts DRC, Pelkey ran second in his heat race and the 6-lap dash. Climbing to fourth in the standings, the former ASCA Champion has one feature win, two heat race victories, one semi-main win, eleven top-10 finishes, and 35 feature laps led on the season.

After winning Canyon’s “Summer Sizzle” on June 29th, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye claimed third in the Queen Creek feature. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply entry, Davis won the night’s first Racers Advantage Store Heat Race and was third in the dash. The five-time Arizona Champion is second in the point chase with three feature wins, five heat race victories, two dash wins, one semi-main win, two hard charger awards, thirteen top-10 finishes, and 62 feature laps led to his credit.

Yuma’s “The Magic Man” Mike Martin ran fourth in the main event after starting tenth. Piloting his #16 Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin claimed fourth in his heat race and was not eligible for the dash. Currently, the “Hall of Fame Classic” winner is third in the standings with one feature win, one fast time award, five heat race victories, ten top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led in the campaign.

Chris Bonneau of Phoenix had a solid night and scored fifth in the Arizona Speedway feature. Racing his #78 Priced Right Auto Sale Triple X, Bonneau was third in his heat race and placed fourth in the dash. Despite missing some races, the hard charger is currently seventh in points with seven top-10 finishes and 12 feature laps led on the year.

Mexico, Indiana’s Ryan Linder made his first start of the year and earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a seventh place run from fifteenth. Driving the Linder-Whitney Motorsports #9 VRP Shocks / King Racing Products X-1, Ryan was fifth in his heat race and was not eligible for the eight car dash. Linder sits thirty-second in points as the series prepares for events at El Paso and Las Cruces.

Shon Deskins of Phoenix earned his sixth heat race win of the campaign at Arizona Speedway. Piloting his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars machine, Deskins was seventh in the dash and scored thirteenth in the main event. To date, the veteran driver is fifth in the point standings with one hard charger award and eight top-10 finishes to his credit. On Friday, July 19th, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars will clash with the New Mexico Motor Racing Association (NMMRA) Sprints at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas.
