R.J. JOHNSON CLAIMS EIGHTH USAC SOUTHWEST VICTORY AT EL PASOsouthwest
Lance Jennings — EL PASO, TX – JULY 21, 2013… Last Friday night, Phoenix, Arizona’s R.J. Johnson continued his winning ways at El Paso Speedway Park. Taking the lead from “The Wildman” Kyle McCutcheon on lap 3, Johnson raced to the USAC SouthWest / NMMRA co-sanctioned feature victory. “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., McCutcheon, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, and Andy Reinbold rounded out the top-five drivers.
Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, R.J. Johnson scored his eighth main event win of the campaign. Claiming second in his heat race and scoring second in the dash, the USAC/CRA “Copper on Dirt” winner continues to lead the point chase. R.J. left El Paso with seven heat race victories, four Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one hard charger award, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 214 feature laps led on the season.
“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye, Arizona earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a second place finish from seventeenth. Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply entry, Davis was seventh in his heat race and won the 15-lap semi-main after starting eleventh. Currently second in points, the five-time Arizona Champion has three feature wins, five heat race victories, two dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 62 feature laps led on the year.
Alamogordo, New Mexico’s “The Wildman” Kyle McCutcheon led the first two laps of the feature before falling to Johnson. Scoring third in his first USAC SouthWest start, the local 305 Sprint Car star placed third in his heat race and won the 6-lap Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash.
“The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma, Arizona took fourth at the checkered flags after starting sixth. Racing his #16 Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin claimed third in his heat race and sixth in the dash. To date, the USAC National “Hall of Fame Classic” winner is third in the standings with one feature win, one fast time award, five heat race victories, eleven top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led to his credit.
Scoring fifth in the USAC SouthWest / NMMRA “Clash at El Paso” was Gilbert, Arizona’s Andy Reinbold. Piloting Todd Underwood’s #19 AME Electrical / Ross Equipment Rentals RSS, Reinbold was second in his heat race and seventh in the dash. The veteran driver is eighth in the standings with one semi-main win and nine top-10 finishes in 2013.
Phoenix, Arizona’s Mike Bonneau won the Racers Advantage Store Heat Race #1. Driving his #29 Priced Right Auto Sales Triple X, Bonneau scored eighth in the dash and was seventh in the 30-lap main event. Mike left El Paso with one Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash win, one hard charger award, four top-10 finishes, and 12 feature laps led.
Chris Bonneau of Phoenix, Arizona raced to victory in the night’s second Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Racing his #78 Priced Right Auto Sales Triple X, Bonneau took fourth in the dash and ran sixteenth in the feature. To date, Chris has seven top-10 finishes, and 12 feature laps led on the season.
Josh Hodges of Tijeras, New Mexico won the program’s third Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Piloting the family owned #74X Napa Auto Parts / Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, Hodges placed fifth in the dash and scored seventeenth in the main event. In limited appearances with the USAC SouthWest series, the young driver has four heat race victories and three top-10 finishes.
“The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, New Mexico won the fourth 8-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Driving John Ziehl’s #20Z Lucas Oil / Bay Hayes Motorsports Maxim, the veteran driver ran third in the dash and scored nineteenth in the main event. To date, the ASCS Champion has two heat race victories and two top-10 finishes on the season.
